Understand iOS 26 Update

Learn how the iOS 26 update may affect your SMS marketing

Written by Chaymae

Apple's iOS 26 update introduces SMS message screening that routes texts from unknown numbers to Spam or Unknown Senders folders. Just as iOS 15 disrupted email tracking with Mail Privacy Protection, iOS 26 brings Message Screening Filters that affect how SMS campaigns reach users.

This guide explains the changes and how to adapt your SMS strategy.

Note: This information is based on the iOS 26 update, officially released on September 15, 2025.

Before You Begin

iOS 26 introduces two major changes affecting SMS marketing:

  1. Message screening for unknown senders – Texts from unsaved numbers are filtered automatically.

  2. New folder structure – Messages are organized into Messages, Unknown Senders, and Spam.

⚠️ Important: Apple's Message Screening feature is not enabled by default when users update to iOS 26. Users can enable it manually in device settings.

However, in Brazil, China, and India, this feature is enabled by default due to high SMS spam rates.

Why This Matters for SMS Marketing

Our early testing of the iOS update confirms that messages not marked as Known may land in Unknown Senders or Spam folders instead of the main inbox. This reduces visibility and lowers the chance recipients will open them.

Potential impact:

  • Lower engagement (open/click) rates.

  • Delayed customer interactions.

  • Missed delivery of promotions and updates.

SMS Message Screening in iOS 26

iOS 26 introduces screening filters that give users more control over who can reach them. These filters focus on managing messages and calls and may significantly impact SMS campaign delivery.

Similar to email, SMS messages are no longer managed in a single inbox. They can be routed to other folders, such as Spam.

How Screening Works

Messages from unsaved numbers are automatically filtered before reaching the main inbox. When a message arrives, iOS checks:

  1. Is the sender's number saved in contacts?

  2. Has the user messaged this number before?

If the sender is not recognized, the message is placed into the Unknown Senders or Spam folder instead of the main Messages inbox. These messages are still accessible, but less visible, and recipients may not check them regularly or at all.

If a recipient trusts your brand, they can manually mark your number as Known. This promotes your future messages to the main inbox.

Message Folder Structure

Messages in iOS 26 are now organized into folders. Users access these folders through a menu in the top-right corner of the Messages screen.

  • Messages – Saved contacts, known senders, and numbers users have messaged before. This is the main inbox users see when they open the Messages app.

  • Unknown Senders – Messages from numbers not in contacts or not marked as known.

  • Spam – Messages flagged by Apple's on-device and user-influenced filters. These messages are automatically deleted after 90 days.

  • Recently Deleted and Unread – Standard folders remain unchanged.

These folders are separated from the main inbox and must be opened manually, as shown below.

How to Adapt Your SMS Strategy

If you use SMS marketing, here's how to keep your messages visible in iOS 26.

Encourage customers to mark your message as “Known”

  • For new subscribers: Send a welcome message prompting them to mark your number as Known. Add this instruction to the success page of your Signup Form.

  • For existing subscribers: Send an email or SMS campaign encouraging them to mark your number as Known. Use simple language like: "Mark this message as Known so you'll always see our updates right away."

💡 You can create a segment to identify contacts who have interacted with your messages on an iOS operating system.

Monitor SMS engagement metrics closely

Keep a close eye on your SMS engagement metrics after the iOS 26 update. Track open and click rates to understand how your audience is responding and whether filtering is affecting visibility.

Adopt a multi-channel approach

Use the email channel alongside SMS to ensure customers see your important offers and messages on time. Multi-channel marketing ensures that if one channel underperforms or faces new limitations, your message can still reach customers through another touchpoint.

FAQ

Can I know whether my customers have enabled message screening if they're not in Brazil, India, or China?

Unfortunately, Apple does not provide visibility into whether individual users have enabled or disabled the Screen Unknown Senders feature. As a workaround, keep a close eye on your SMS engagement metrics after the iOS 26 update to monitor whether your metrics were affected.

Does iOS 26 affect email campaigns?

No. iOS 26 changes only affect SMS messages. Email campaigns are not impacted by the new message screening filters.

Can I test if my SMS lands in Unknown Senders?

Yes. Send a test SMS to an iOS 26 device where your number is not saved as a contact. Check which folder the message lands in.
