Add & Configure Abandoned Products Item

Learn how to set up Abandoned Products item in your automation email

The Abandoned Products Item automatically displays products a contact viewed or added to cart but didn't purchase. Use it in your cart recovery workflows to recover lost revenue by reminding contacts of items they left behind.

Once added to your email, the item automatically pulls product images, titles, descriptions, and prices directly from your store.

Before You Begin

⚠️ Do not add more than one Abandoned Products item to the same email. Only the first item will pull data; additional items will show placeholders.

Add The Abandoned Products Item

Step 1. Open your Product Abandonment, Abandoned Cart, or Abandoned Checkout automation workflow.

Step 2. Click on the email stepEdit content to open the email builder.

Step 3. In the left sidebar under Add Elements, drag the Abandoned Products item into your email layout.

The item will display placeholder images in the editor. When the email is sent, Omnisend replaces these with the actual products the contact abandoned.

💡 Preview with real data: Click Preview Dynamic Preview and select a contact who recently abandoned products to see how the email will look with actual product images and details.

Configure The Abandoned Products Item Settings

Use the right-hand sidebar to customize how abandoned products appear in your email.

Layout and Number of Products

  • Layout: Choose Columns (stacked) or Side by side (horizontal).

  • Number of products: Adjust the slider to show up to 12 products.

  • Columns: Adjust the slider to show up to 4 products in one row.

Note: If the contact abandoned fewer products than your selected layout (e.g., 3-column layout but only 1 abandoned product), the layout adjusts automatically to fit the actual number of products.

Abandoned Products Options

Select products you don't want to display in the Abandoned Products item.

💡 Useful for excluding gift cards, samples, or promotional items from recovery emails.

Product Details

Select which product information to display:

  • Product image

  • Product price (with or without old price)

  • "Shop Now" button (links to product page)

  • Product description

  • Product title

Customize button style (color, text, padding) in the Buttons section.

Product Display

By default, the Abandoned Products item excludes products that are out of stock. However, if you'd like to include them, check the box "Show items that are out of stock".

Note: If the contact abandoned only out-of-stock products and this setting is disabled, the Abandoned Products item will appear empty.

Mobile Stacking

Enable the "Stack on mobile" option for a better visual experience on mobile.

Visibility on Devices

Control which devices show the Abandoned Products item:

  • All devices (default)

  • Mobile only

  • Desktop only

Padding and Colors

  • Padding: Adjust spacing around the Abandoned Products item (top, bottom, left, right).

  • Background: Choose an image or solid color as the background of your Abandoned Products item.

  • Background behavior: Choose whether the background includes or excludes padding.

  • Color: Customize the background color.

Troubleshooting

Product images are missing in sent emails

If images don't appear:

  1. Verify that only one Abandoned Products item exists in the email.

  2. Check that your store's product images are accessible (not password-protected or blocked).

  3. Confirm the automation workflow is set to Product Abandonment, Abandoned Cart, or Abandoned Checkout (the item doesn't work in other workflows).

Currency format doesn't match my store settings

Currency format can be customized in Store settings Currency formats. You can adjust:

  • Currency symbol placement (before/after amount).

  • Decimal separator (dot or comma).

  • Thousands separator (comma, dot, or space).

FAQ

What happens if I select a few-column layout, for example, 3 columns, and my customer abandoned only 1 product?

If you configure a multi-column layout (e.g., 3 products side by side) and the contact abandons fewer products than your selected layout, the number of columns adjusts automatically to fit the actual number of abandoned products.

For example, if you set a 3-column layout but the contact abandoned only 1 product, the email will display 1 product instead of 3 empty placeholders.

💡 Tip: For a cleaner appearance, center-align all elements of the Abandoned Products item (image, title, price, button) in the styling settings.

Why don't I see products when I send a test abandoned cart email?

Test emails don't include real event data, so the Abandoned Products item will show placeholders or grey boxes. To see actual products, trigger a real abandonment:

  1. Go to your store and add products to your cart (or view products for Product Abandonment).

  2. Leave without completing checkout.

  3. Wait for the workflow to trigger (you can temporarily reduce the delay to 5 minutes in Workflow Settings Trigger).

The email you receive will display real products with images, prices, and links.

Can I exclude specific products from showing in abandoned cart emails?

Yes. Open your abandoned cart email → Click the Abandoned Product item and find the Abandoned products options settings on the right-hand menu and select the products you want to exclude.
