Troubleshoot Anonymized Contacts from Third-Party App Integrations

Learn how to troubleshoot issues with contacts synced from 3rd-party apps

Written by Armintas Griežė

Some third-party apps, such as ShipStation, Gorgias, or Amazon, pass contacts with anonymized email addresses to your ecommerce platform, which then syncs them to Omnisend. These contacts can inflate your billing, affect Automation statistics, and reduce campaign accuracy.

This article explains how to identify these contacts and fix the issues they cause.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure you have at least one third-party app integrated with your store (via Shopify or another ecommerce platform).

  • You'll need access to AudienceSegments in Omnisend to complete these steps.

  • Anonymized contacts often use domains such as marketplace.amazon.com, marketplace.amazon.co.uk, or amazonshopbuy.com.

Step 1: Segment Your Anonymized Contacts

Before fixing any issues, identify the contacts causing them.

  1. Go to AudienceSegmentsCreate segment Create from scratch.

  2. Add a rule: Email address contains → enter the anonymized domain (e.g., marketplace.amazon.com).

  3. Repeat for each domain relevant to your integrations.

  4. Save the segment.

Use this segment in all steps below.

Step 2: Fix Billing Issues

Anonymized contacts count toward your billing plan if they have a subscribed status. Unsubscribing them once a month, before your billing cycle restarts, prevents them from inflating your contact count.

  1. Go to AudienceSegments → open the segment you created in Step 1.

  2. Check the Name box to select all contacts.

  3. Click ActionsUnsubscribe.

Step 3: Improve Automation Performance

Anonymized contacts can enter your Automation workflows and distort open, click, and conversion metrics. Exclude them using an Audience filter.

  1. Open the Automation workflow you want to fix.

  2. Click the trigger field to open trigger settings → Go to the Audience filters.

  3. Add a rule: Segment is not → select the segment from Step 1.

  4. Save the workflow.

This prevents anonymized contacts from triggering or passing through the workflow.

Step 4: Improve Email Campaign Statistics

When sending Email Campaigns to all contacts, exclude anonymized contacts to keep your reporting accurate.

  1. In your Email Campaign, go to the Recipients step.

  2. Click Exclude segment → select the segment from Step 1.

  3. Continue with the rest of your campaign setup.

FAQ

Will unsubscribing these contacts delete them from Omnisend?

No. Unsubscribing changes their status but keeps them in your account.

Why do these contacts appear in Omnisend at all?

When channels like Amazon process orders, they anonymize the buyer's email address. If a third-party app (or Shopify itself) passes these order events to Omnisend, the anonymized email is created as a contact.

Do I need to do this for every integration?

Only for integrations that pass order or fulfillment events with anonymized emails. Common examples include ShipStation, Gorgias, and marketplace-connected Shopify stores.
