Tags are labels you create to organize and segment your Audience. Use tags to categorize contacts based on their behavior, preferences, or source – then target them with personalized campaigns and automation workflows. There's no limit to the number of tags you can create.
Where to View Tags
Tags are visible in two places:
Individual contact profiles – Go to Audience → Contacts → open any profile → scroll to the Tags section
Audience → Tags – View all tags, contact counts per tag, and bulk export/delete options
Tags are not displayed as a column in the contact list table.
Ways for Adding Tags
There are a few ways to tag your contact:
Add a tag to your contact's profile page.
Add a tag in bulk in the Audience tab.
Add a tag in the Signup Form.
Add a tag in Automation flows.
Add a tag while importing your contacts.
Each of these options offers specific benefits and can provide valuable insights into your contacts. Let's check each of these options in greater detail.
Add a Tag to a Contact's Profile Page
To tag a single contact, open their profile and add or create tags.
Go to Audience → select a contact → scroll to Tags → click Add → type the tag name → select an existing tag or create a new one.
💡 Tip: You need to click Add separately for each tag on the profile page. To tag multiple contacts faster, use bulk tagging (see below).
Add Tags in Bulk in the Audience Tab
You can tag contacts in bulk from your whole contact list or from a segment.
Step 1. Go to Audience → Contacts (or open a saved segment)
Step 2. Select contacts:
Check individual contacts, or
Click the – button next to Name → select all contacts
Step 3. Click Actions → Add tag → choose or create a tag
⚠️ Important: Bulk tagging applies only to contacts currently in the segment. New contacts entering the segment later won't automatically receive the tag. To tag contacts dynamically as they enter a segment, use segment-based automation (see FAQ below).
💡 Tip: You can use the same steps to remove tags in bulk (Actions → Remove tag).
Add Tags in Signup Forms
You can add a tag to your Signup Form settings to automatically tag all contacts who submit the form (new subscribers and existing ones).
Go to Forms → open your form → Behavior → Audience management → add your tag
This is useful for tracking signup source (e.g., "signup: homepage popup") or offering segmentation (e.g., "interest: fitness").
Add Tags in Automation Workflows
Add or remove tags at any point in your automation workflow to label contacts based on their actions.
Step 1. Open your automation in the workflow editor
Step 2. Drag the Tag block to any step in your workflow
Step 3. Choose Add or Remove → select or create a tag → click Save
Tag block options:
Place Tag blocks anywhere in the workflow
Use multiple Tag blocks in one workflow
Tag contacts when they enter/exit the flow, or after they receive a message (any channel)
Use tags in automation to label contacts who complete specific actions (e.g., "clicked product link," "abandoned cart"), then create segments based on those tags for follow-up campaigns.
Add Tags During Contact Import
You can add a tag to all contacts during a file import. Go to Audience → Import → upload your file → in the Organize step, add a tag
Omnisend automatically adds two tags during import:
source: manual importimported from a file on [date/time]
You can add your own custom tag (e.g., "tradeshow leads") to make it easier to segment imported contacts later.
Using Tags for Segmentation
Tags help you segment your Audience and target communication precisely.
To create a segment based on a tag:
Go to Audience → Segments → Create segment → Create from Scratch → Add filter → Tag is "[your tag name]" → Save & show contacts
You can also use Omnisend's AI assistant to quickly create segments using prompts such as "Contacts with the tag [YOUR_TAG]".
Once you've created a segment, you can:
Use it for email or SMS campaign sends
Trigger automation workflows when contacts enter/exit the segment
Display specific Signup Forms only to contacts in the segment
Combining Multiple Tags
To segment contacts with multiple tags:
OR logic (contacts with Tag A or Tag B): Add multiple "Tag is" filters in the same filter group
AND logic (contacts with both Tag A and Tag B): Add "Tag is" filters in separate filter groups connected by AND
You can also combine tags with other segment filters (e.g., purchase history, location, engagement) for precise targeting.
Removing Tags
You can remove tags in four ways:
Untag a single contact on their profile page
Remove tags in bulk for all contacts or a segment
Remove tags in automation workflows
Delete a tag entirely from your account
Untag a Contact on Their Profile Page
Go to Audience → Contacts → open the contact profile → scroll to Tags → click the X next to the tag you want to remove.
Remove Tags in Bulk
You can remove a tag from multiple contacts at once.
Go to Audience → Contacts (or open a saved segment) → select contacts → Actions → Remove tag.
Remove Tags in Automation
You can add a Tag block to your automation workflow, then select Remove instead of Add and choose the tag to remove.
Manage All Tags
You can view and manage all tags in one place. Go to Audience → Tags.
From this page, you can:
View all tags and how many contacts have each tag
Filter tags by name or contact count
Export all contacts with a specific tag
Untag all contacts with a specific tag
Delete a tag entirely
Best Practices
Auto-Tag New Contacts Entering a Segment
To automatically tag new contacts when they enter a segment:
Create a custom automation with the trigger Contact entered segment → select your segment
Add a Tag block and choose your tag
Save and activate
New contacts who meet the segment criteria will be tagged automatically. The workflow will apply the tag without sending any messages.
Example: A customer buys Product X for the first time and enters a segment where the rule is Ordered product → Product is X. The automation tags them as "purchased: Product X" for future targeting
Remove a Tag When Contacts Enter a Segment
To automatically remove a tag when contacts enter a segment:
Create a custom automation with the trigger Contact entered segment → select your segment
Add a Tag block → select Remove → choose the tag to remove
Save and activate
This is useful for removing tags such as "first-time buyer" after a customer makes a second purchase.
FAQ
Can I auto-tag new contacts entering a segment?
Yes. To automatically tag contacts when they enter a segment (not just bulk tag existing contacts):
Create an automation with the trigger Contact entered segment → select your segment
Add a Tag block and choose or create your tag
This way, new contacts will be tagged automatically as they meet the segment criteria.
Can I rename a tag?
No, tags cannot be renamed once created. To replace a tag:
Select all contacts with the old tag
Go to Actions → Add tag (new name)
Then Actions → Remove tag (old name)
💡 Tip: Add the new tag first, especially if a segment is based on the old tag, so you don't lose segmentation.
How do I add multiple tags to a single contact at once?
On the contact profile page, you need to click Add separately for each tag. For faster tagging of multiple contacts, use Bulk tagging (Audience → select contacts → Actions → Add tag). During import, you can also add multiple tags at once in the Organize step.
How do I see which contacts have a specific tag?
Go to Audience → Tags → find your tag → click Export to download all contacts with that tag.
Alternatively, create a segment: Segments → Create segment → Add filter → Tag is "[your tag name]".
Tags are not displayed as a column in the contact list table – they're visible on individual contact profiles and in the Tags page.
How do I combine multiple tags in a segment (AND vs. OR)?
To segment contacts with multiple tags:
OR logic (contacts with Tag A or Tag B or both): Add multiple "Tag is" filters in the same filter group
AND logic (contacts must have both Tag A and Tag B): Add "Tag is" filters in separate filter groups connected by AND
Is there a limit to how many tags I can create?
No, there's no limit. You can create as many tags as you need to organize your contacts. All tags are listed in Audience → Tags.
Why don't tags show up in my contact list table?
Tags are not displayed as a column in the contact list table. To view tags:
Open an individual contact profile → scroll to the Tags section
Go to Audience → Tags to see all tags and contact counts
