Troubleshoot Blocked Email Domains

Learn more about blocked email domains and

Written by Ira

Omnisend automatically blocks certain email domains, typically from third-party marketplaces, to protect your sender reputation and prevent billing for invalid contacts.

This guide shows you how to view, customize, and manage the blocked Email domains list in Omnisend.

What Are Blocked Email Domains?

If you sell products on third-party marketplaces like TikTok or Amazon and sync them to your store, you may receive orders with proxy email addresses (e.g., "[email protected]").

These addresses are temporary and anonymous. Sending to them causes bounces and may violate marketplace policies. Despite being unusable, these contacts count toward your Omnisend billing.

The Blocked Email Domains feature automatically unsubscribes contacts from these domains, protecting your sender reputation and ensuring you only pay for valid contacts.

Benefits

  • Protect Your Sender Reputation: Prevents emails from being sent to invalid domains that trigger bounces.

  • Accurate Billing: Unsubscribed contacts don't count toward your billing, so you only pay for valuable contacts.

Manage Blocked Domains

1. View the Blocked Domain List

Go to Store Settings Audience Management to view all blocked domains.

The list shows each domain's Type (Added by Omnisend or manually) and Status (Blocked or Allowed).

2. Pre-Defined Blocked Domains

Omnisend pre-adds marketplace domains to the blocked list for all users. This list updates automatically – you don't need to take action when new domains are added.

3. Customize the Domain List

You can block or allow pre-defined domains, or add custom domains.

To block a new domain:

  1. Go to Store Settings Audience Management.

  2. Click Add domain.

  3. Enter the domain name.

  4. Click Save domain.

To allow a previously blocked domain:

  1. Find the domain in the list.

  2. Click the three-dots menu → Select Allow.

4. Automatic Unsubscription for New Contacts

When a new contact is added to your audience, we check if their email domain is blocked. If it is, the contact is automatically unsubscribed.

Existing contacts: If you already have contacts from blocked domains, create a segment to identify them, then unsubscribe manually.

FAQ

Does blocking a domain affect existing contacts?

No. Blocking only affects new contacts going forward. Existing contacts remain in your audience unchanged. To unsubscribe them, create a segment filtering by email domain, then use bulk actions to unsubscribe or delete them.

I blocked a domain and deleted the contacts, but they keep reappearing. Why?

If your store integration (Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.) is still active, it will re-sync deleted contacts whenever they make a purchase or update their profile. To stop this, block or delete the contact in your store first, then delete them in Omnisend.

Can I block a specific email address (e.g., [email protected]) rather than the whole domain?

No. The blocked domains feature only works at the domain level. To block individual addresses, manually unsubscribe them from your Contacts list, or create a segment and use bulk actions to unsubscribe them.

What if I want to email contacts from a blocked domain?
Click Allow next to the domain in Store Settings Audience Management. New contacts from that domain will no longer be auto-unsubscribed. For old contacts, create a segment and resubscribe them manually.

Can I see which domains Omnisend added vs. which I added manually?
Yes. Go to Store Settings Audience Management. The "Type" column shows whether you or Omnisend added the domain.

How do I unblock a domain?

Go to Store Settings Audience Management Blocked email domains. Find the domain in the list and click the three dots next to it →  select Allow. New contacts from this domain will no longer be auto-unsubscribed. Existing contacts remain unsubscribed unless you manually resubscribe them.
