Add Contact to Existing Segment

Learn how you can add a contact to an already existing segment

Segments in Omnisend auto-update based on filters. You can't manually add contacts to a segment. To include specific contacts in an existing segment, tag them during import or manually, then add that tag to your segment filters.

This guide walks through how to manually add contacts to selected segments.

Before You Begin

  • Segments update automatically when contacts meet or no longer meet the defined filters. Learn how segments update.

  • You can't drag-and-drop contacts into segments. Use tags, email filters, or phone number filters instead.

  • If your segment is used in a segment-based automation, updating filters may affect who enters or exits the workflow.

Step 1: Import Contacts and Add a Tag

Import your contacts using the contact import guide.

During the Organize step, add a tag to the contacts being imported.

💡 Tip: If you didn't add a tag during import, you can tag contacts manually afterward.

Step 2: Update Your Segment Filters

Contacts enter segments automatically when they meet the defined filters. To include your newly tagged contacts:

  1. Go to AudienceSegments → open your existing segment.

  2. Add a filter: Tagis → select your tag.

  3. Set the filter connector to OR (not AND) to keep existing segment members who don't have the new tag.

  4. Click Update segment.

Your contacts with the tag now appear in the segment alongside existing members.

⚠️ Important: Segment-Based Automation Impact

If your segment is used in a segment-based automation, updating the segment filters will affect who enters or exits the workflow.

To prevent existing contacts from re-triggering the automation after you update the segment, adjust your automation settings.

FAQ

Can I add contacts to a segment without importing?
Yes. Manually tag existing contacts under Audience → select contacts → ActionsAdd Tag, then update your segment filters to include that tag.

What if I forgot to tag contacts during import?
You can add tags manually to existing contacts anytime.

Do tags auto-apply to new contacts who enter the segment later?
No. Tags must be applied manually or during import. If you want new contacts to enter automatically, use dynamic filters (e.g., purchase behavior, email activity) instead of tags.

What happens if I update a segment used in automation?
Contacts who meet the new filters will enter or exit the automation based on your workflow settings. Learn more.
