Shopify does not allow merchants (unless on Shopify Plus) to disable the order confirmation email. This is a Shopify policy – not an Omnisend limitation. To avoid sending duplicate order details, you'll replace Shopify's email content with a brief Thank You message and send your full order confirmation through Omnisend.
Customers will receive two emails:
A simple acknowledgment (Thank You) sent via Shopify.
The complete order confirmation sent via Omnisend.
💡 Tip: If you're on Shopify Plus, you can fully disable the order confirmation email in Shopify and send only the Omnisend version. This two-email workaround is only needed for standard Shopify plans.
Before You Begin
⚠️ Important: The Thank You email is designed in Omnisend but sent through Shopify – not by Omnisend. You'll copy the HTML from Omnisend and paste it into Shopify's notification settings. This replaces Shopify's default order confirmation content with your custom message.
Step 1: Access the Thank You Message Editor
Go to Automations → Order Confirmation in Omnisend.
Click on the background of your automation (not on a message block).
Click Edit "Thank you!" email button.
Step 2: Design Your Message
You'll be taken to a simplified Email Builder. Keep this message brief – just a simple "Thank you for your order" with no product or order details.
Don't try to recreate your full order confirmation here. Your customers will receive this short message via Shopify, followed immediately by the complete order confirmation from Omnisend.
When you're happy with the design, click GET HTML to view further instructions.
Step 3: Copy the HTML and Paste It into Shopify
Copy the HTML code from Omnisend.
Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Notifications.
Scroll to Order Confirmation and click Edit code in the top-right.
Replace the default content with the HTML you copied from Omnisend.
Click Save.
Ensure the Order Confirmation sequence is enabled in Omnisend before replacing the HTML code.
Personalization in the Thank You Email
If you want to include customer data (like first name), use Shopify's Liquid format instead of Omnisend tags:
[[contact.first_name]] in Omnisend → {{ name }} in Shopify.
Revert to Shopify's Default Order Confirmation
To restore Shopify's original email:
Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Notifications.
Click Order Confirmation → Edit code.
Scroll to the bottom and click Revert to default.
FAQ
Will my customers be confused by receiving two emails?
No, if set up correctly. The first email is a brief acknowledgment; the second contains all order details. Keep the Thank You message simple without order details so customers understand it's just an acknowledgment.
Why can't I completely disable Shopify's order confirmation email?
Shopify does not allow merchants on standard plans to disable this email entirely. If you're on Shopify Plus, you can fully disable it and send only the Omnisend version.
I tested my setup, and customers received duplicate order confirmations. What did I do wrong?
You likely enabled your Omnisend Order Confirmation automation but forgot to replace Shopify's order confirmation content with the Thank You HTML. Follow the steps under "Create Your Thank You Message" to complete the setup.
Does Omnisend automatically replace Shopify's emails?
No. After you create automations in Omnisend, you must manually replace or disable the corresponding Shopify notifications. Otherwise, customers will receive duplicate emails.
Where do I disable other Shopify notifications (Shipping Confirmation, Abandoned Cart)?
Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Notifications and disable Shipping Confirmation and Order Canceled. For Abandoned Cart, go to Settings → Checkout and uncheck "Automatically Send Abandoned Checkout Emails."
