Wheel of Fortune is a gamified popup form provided by Omnisend. It is an interactive way to collect subscribers by offering them to spin a wheel and win a discount or anything else you would like to offer in exchange for their signup.

Before You Begin

  • Wheel of Fortune is an additional item you can add to any Omnisend popups.

  • To have your form working, make sure you have a live store with an Omnisend snippet. If you have Shopify or Bigcommerce or are using one of our plugins, like Magento, your snippet is already there. If you are on custom API integration, refer to this guide.

  • Wheel of Fortune Item is available on all the Omnisend plans.

  • This guide is dedicated to Wheel of Fortune Item. To learn how to set up a popup form, jump to the dedicated guide.

  • Discount Codes. Make sure that all discount codes you wish to use in the Wheel of Fortune are created in your store. Omnisend does not automatically create these codes, so they must be generated manually on your ecommerce platform.

Setup Process

Step 1. Create or Edit a Popup Form. Go to Forms → Create a new Popup form or open an existing one. Edit the form as needed, then Add the Wheel of Fortune item from the left-side menu.

💡Tip: You can also choose the Wheel of Fortune preset from the Templates library.

To access the settings of your Wheel of Fortune, click on it in the form builder. Check the image below for reference.

Step 2. Customize Wheel Style. Click on the Wheel of Fortune item → Preview all settings on the right side. Wheel style settings allow you to change the color and padding of the Wheel of Fortune pointer and adjust its size.

  • Pointer Customization. In the Wheel Styles section, you can customize the pointer color to match your brand or form design. You can select any of the preselected colors, find one on the color palette, or input the hex code.

  • Padding Configuration. Adjust the padding around the Wheel of Fortune item to control the spacing inside the popup.

Step 3. Configure the Wheel Slices. As a next step, you need to set up the slices.

  • Set Up Slices Number. You can configure the Wheel of Fortune with 3 to 20 slices, each customized individually.

  • Customize Each Winning Slice. For each winning slice, you can:

    • Change the text displayed on the slice.

    • Add a discount or prize.

    • Assign a probability for the slice to appear. Please note that probability always has to sum up to 100%. Otherwise, you will see an error message.

    • Change the color of the slice and its text.

  • Losing Slices
You can decide whether or not you want to add losing slices. You can:

    • Have as many losing slices as you wish (select the checkbox 'Make this a losing slice,' or opt for no losing slices.

    • Change the color of the slice and its text.

Note: If a slice is set as a losing slice, the visitor will never land on it.

Step 4. Adjust Layout. Here, you can select the background color, change paddings to manage the empty space around the item, and align the content vertically (top, middle, and bottom positions) in the layout.

Success and Subscribed Messages

Your customers see the success message upon successful subscription. Click on the Success tab in the bottom menu to see and edit your success message.

On the left-side menu, you will see a Discount item that can be added to your Success message. You need to drag and drop this item to your success message.

In the Discount item settings, you will see 2 options:

  • Use the Wheel of Fortune discount. For your Wheel of Fortune popup, you should select this type of discount. This will show the discounts you have set up on the slices. Once the users spin the Wheel and submit the forms → they will see the discount they won based on the slices setup.

  • Use your own discount. This option can be only used for popup forms with no Wheel of Fortune item added. You won't be able to select it if you have the item added.

Please be aware of the following important information regarding the Wheel of Fortune and discounts for subscribers:

New Subscribers: For new subscribers, it operates as follows:

  • The wheel spins first.

  • After the spin, the success message with the discount is displayed.

Subscriber Discount Display: People who are already subscribed to your newsletter won't see the discount on the success page generated by the Wheel of Fortune feature. When dealing with existing subscribers, the spinning wheel step is skipped entirely. Instead, the system shows the 'already subscribed' message immediately.

Removing Subscribed Page

If you want both existing and new subscribers to have the opportunity to spin the wheel and receive discounts, you can remove the subscribed page from your form.

  • By doing so, you ensure that discounts are visible to all customers, including those who are already subscribed and new subscribers.

  • This is particularly useful for forms like the Wheel of Fortune, where you want to extend the chance to win discounts to all of your customers.

Teaser for Wheel of Fortune

Add a Teaser to your form that will still stand out to your users because it appears around the edge of the page. To turn it on, navigate to the bottom menu → Teaser → Enable. Once it's enabled, you can access the Teaser tab whenever you need.

You will be able to edit the Teaser design, text, placement, and timing upon which it should be shown to your customers.

Once your customers click on the Teaser, the popup with Wheel of Fortune will unfold for them 🎉

Wheel of Fortune Discount Code in Welcome Automation

When you set up Welcome automation triggered by the 'Subscribed to a marketing' event, you can use the [[event.discount_code]] personalization property to deliver targeted messages and manage discount-related flows effectively.

Here’s how the process works:

Triggering the Automation:

  • The automation is initiated when a contact subscribes via the Wheel of Fortune form.

  • The 'Subscribed to a marketing event' captures the event properties, including the discount code generated by the Wheel of Fortune.

Using the Discount Code in Personalization:

  • In the email editor, you can choose Personalization → Automation Event -  Discount code. This allows you to insert the unique discount code the subscriber has received in Wheel of Fortune directly into your email content.

  • For example, in the body of your welcome email, the discount code will automatically appear as: “Use code [[event.discount_code]] to get your special offer!”

  • This personalization adds value to your customer by providing an immediate, customized experience.

This setup gives you greater flexibility in managing your welcome flows and tailoring the customer experience based on the Wheel of Fortune's discount codes.

Please note, in the default Omnisend Welcome Flow, the system is set to only send welcome emails to first-time subscribers. This is done by using a trigger filter that checks if a contact is subscribing for the first time. However, if you want to include existing subscribers in the automation, you’ll need to modify this setup. Below are the two ways to do it.

Option 1: Remove the "First-Time Subscription" Filter

If you want to send the same welcome email to both new and previously subscribed contacts, you can simply remove the "First Subscription is true" filter.

  1. In your automation flow, locate the trigger filter that checks for "First Subscription is true".

  2. Delete this filter.

  3. Now, the flow will trigger for all contacts, regardless of whether they are subscribing for the first time or re-subscribing.

Outcome: This method sends the same welcome email to both new and existing subscribers without needing any further splits.

Option 2: Use a Conditional Split to Customize the Emails

If you prefer to send different emails based on whether the contact is a new subscriber or has subscribed before, you can keep the flow more flexible by using a conditional split later in the automation.

  1. Keep the default trigger: Use the "Subscribed to a Marketing Event" trigger for the automation.

  2. Remove the "First Subscription" filter: This step ensures that the flow will trigger for both new and existing subscribers.

  3. Add a Conditional Split after the trigger:

    • Set the condition to "First Subscription is true".

    • This creates two branches:

      • Yes Path: For first-time subscribers (new signups).

      • No Path: For returning or existing subscribers.

  4. Customize the emails for each path:

    • The Yes Path can send a standard welcome email.

    • The No Path can send a different email to existing subscribers or simply resend the same email.

Outcome: This method allows you to tailor your messaging for new and existing subscribers without losing the flexibility of the flow.
