The Wheel of Fortune is a gamified Signup Form item in Omnisend. It lets you engage visitors with a spin-to-win experience, where they spin the wheel to win a prize or discount in exchange for subscribing.

💡 The Wheel of Fortune is optimized for Popup Forms, but it also works with Landing page, Embedded, and Flyout Forms. While this guide focuses on Popup setup, the same process applies to all form types.

Before You Begin

  • Wheel of Fortune is an additional item you can add to any Omnisend popups.

  • To have your form working, make sure you have a live store with an Omnisend snippet. If you have Shopify or Bigcommerce or are using one of our plugins, like Magento, your snippet is already there. If you are on custom API integration, refer to this guide.

  • The Wheel of Fortune Item is available on all the Omnisend plans.

  • This guide is dedicated to the Wheel of Fortune item. To learn how to set up a popup form, jump to the dedicated guide.

  • Discount Codes. Make sure that all discount codes you wish to use in the Wheel of Fortune are created in your store. Omnisend does not automatically create these codes, so they must be generated manually on your ecommerce platform. If you prefer not to show the discount on the form, you can simply delete the discount block from your form's success page.

Setup Process

Step 1. Create or Edit a Popup Form.

Go to FormsCreate a new Popup form or open an existing one. Edit the form as needed, then Add the Wheel of Fortune item from the left-side menu.

💡 Tip: You can also choose the Wheel of Fortune preset from the Templates library.

To access settings, click the Wheel of Fortune item in the form builder.

Step 2. Customize Wheel Style.

Click the Wheel of Fortune item to preview and edit its settings on the right-side panel. Under Wheel styles, you can customize the following:

  • Width: Adjust the wheel’s width using the slider or enter a percentage manually.

  • Pointer: Change the pointer color using preset options, the color picker, or by entering a hex code.

  • Padding: Modify the spacing around the wheel to control how it fits within the popup.

Step 3. Configure the Wheel Slices.

After adding and styling the Wheel of Fortune block, your next step is to set up the slices.

Set the Number of Slices

You can create 3 to 20 slices, each customizable individually.

Customize Winning Slices

For each winning slice, you can adjust the following:

Setting

Description

Slice Color

Customize the background color of the slice.

Text or image

Name or add an image to the slice to best express the prize underneath it.

Discount Code

Paste your discount code for each winning slice (must be created in your ecommerce store).

Probability

Set the probability for landing on each slice. The total probability for all winning slices must equal 100%.

Note: You can split the probability between winning slices in any way, as long as the total equals 100%. Probability values must be whole numbers (e.g., 1, 5, 20). Decimal values like 0.1 are not supported.

Set Up Losing Slices

You can choose whether to include losing slices (slices with no prize). You can:

  • Select the checkbox "Make this a losing slice" to mark a slice as non-winning.

  • Add as many losing slices as you wish.

  • Customize the color and text for each losing slice.

Note: Visitors will never land on a losing slice. It exists only to create balance and visual variation on the wheel.

Add Images to Slices

To make the wheel more engaging, you can add JPG, PNG, or GIF images (max 2000px). You can also add Alt text for better accessibility.

Step 4. Adjust Layout.

In this step, you can customize the background color, adjust padding to control spacing around the wheel, and set vertical alignment (top, middle, or bottom) for the content within the layout.

Success and Subscribed Messages

Customers see a success message after successfully subscribing. To view or edit it, go to the Success tab in the bottom menu.

In the left-side menu, you’ll find a Discount item that can be added to the success message. Drag and drop it into your message to include a discount for subscribers.

You can always remove the Discount block from the success message if you'd prefer to deliver the discount via your Welcome Automation.

Discount Options

When configuring the Discount item, you’ll see two options:

  • Use the Wheel of Fortune discount
Use this option when your form includes a Wheel of Fortune. After spinning and submitting the form, the customer will see the discount they’ve won, based on how the wheel is configured.

  • Use your own discount
This option is only available for popup forms that don’t include a Wheel of Fortune. It cannot be selected if the wheel is already added to your form.

Handling Existing Subscribers and the Subscribed Page

By default, new subscribers are directed to the Success Page after submitting the form, where they see the discount they’ve received.

However, existing subscribers are directed to the Subscribed Page, where they see a "You’re already subscribed" message instead of the discount or wheel.

You have two options for managing how existing subscribers are handled:

  • Keep the Subscribed Page to restrict access
Existing subscribers will not be able to spin the wheel. After submitting the form, they’ll see the "You're already subscribed" message and won’t be shown the Wheel of Fortune or any discount.

  • Remove the Subscribed Page to allow access
Both new and existing subscribers will be able to spin the wheel. This ensures that everyone, regardless of subscription status, has a chance to win a discount.

Teaser for Wheel of Fortune

Add a Teaser to draw more attention to your popup. The Teaser appears at the edge of the page.

To enable the Teaser, go to the bottom menu → click Add option→ select Teaser → customize the Teaser design, text, placement, and timing.

Once your customers click on the Teaser, the popup with Wheel of Fortune will unfold for them.

Using Wheel of Fortune with Multistep Forms

The Wheel of Fortune can also be integrated into multistep forms, giving you greater flexibility to design interactive, high-converting form experiences.

You can configure the Wheel of Fortune in various ways within a two-step form. Here are some examples:

  1. Wheel of Fortune + Email in the First Step, Collect SMS in the Second Step

  2. Yes/No Question in the First Step, Wheel of Fortune + Email in the Second Step

  3. Wheel of Fortune Only in the First Step, Collect Email in the Second Step

You can also mix and match fields to create custom flows, such as collecting personal information, depending on your goals.

⚠️ Important Rules:

  • The Wheel can only appear in one step. You can place it in either Step 1 or Step 2, but not both.

  • Contact information is required. You must collect contact details (email or phone) in at least one of the two steps, with a dedicated field in either step.

  • If the Wheel is placed in Step 1, make sure to include a Next Step button to guide users to Step 2, where contact information will be collected.

  • Discounts are shown only after both steps are completed. The Wheel of Fortune result (i.e., the discount) will not be revealed until the user completes the full form flow.

Wheel of Fortune Discount Code in Welcome Automation

You can send Wheel of Fortune discount codes via email using our Wheel of Fortune automation preset.

The automation is triggered when a contact subscribes through the Wheel of Fortune form. The Subscribed to marketing event trigger captures event properties, including the discount code generated during the spin.

This preset includes a specific trigger filter based on Wheel of Fortune form settings, ensuring only contacts who spun the wheel enter this flow.

After the trigger and a 1-minute delay, a Conditional Split will split your customers based on the condition: "First subscription is true." This checks whether the contact is subscribing for the first time or has previously subscribed:

Path A: First-Time Subscribers (YES)

  • Sends a Welcome Email customized for new subscribers.

  • The email includes the [[event.discount_code]] personalization tag, which automatically inserts the discount code won via the wheel.

  • The contact exits the workflow after this email.

💡 You can fully customize the email content and settings, just make sure the discount code tag remains visible to the recipient.

Path B: Returning Subscribers (NO)

  • Sends an email tailored to existing subscribers who returned to spin the wheel.

  • The email also includes the [[event.discount_code]] tag, showing the unique discount code from the form.

  • The contact exits the workflow after receiving this email.

💡 Tip: If you remove the default discount block and rebuild the email manually, you can reinsert the discount code by opening the email editor and clicking PersonalizationAutomation EventDiscount code. This will add:
"Use code [[event.discount_code]] to get your special offer!"

⚠️ Important: Avoid Sending Duplicate Welcome Emails

If you also have a general Welcome automation, make sure to exclude Wheel of Fortune subscribers from it to prevent sending two welcome emails to the same person.

In your Welcome automation, update the trigger filters to have an additional filter: Form settings 'does not contain' wheelOfFortune.

FAQ

Can existing subscribers spin the wheel?

Yes. To allow this, remove the Subscribed Page from your form. This way, all visitors will see a discount on your success page. Learn more about handling subscribers spinning the Wheel of Fortune.

Can I make a losing slice that visitors sometimes land on?

No. Losing slices are visual only. To create a "losing" experience, you can add a winning slice with a lower discount and assign it a probability.

Does Omnisend generate discount codes automatically for Wheel of Fortune?

No. You need to create all discount codes manually in your store (Shopify, BigCommerce, etc.) before setting up the wheel.

Why can't I find the [[event.discount_code]] tag in my email?

This tag only appears in Wheel of Fortune-triggered automations. Use trigger Subscribed to a marketing event with filter Form settings contains wheelOfFortune and you'll be able to see the tag.
