Boost Campaigns with Automation

Learn how to engage your customers effectively with automated follow-up messages using "Message sent" trigger

Written by Ira

Use the Message Sent trigger in Automation to re-engage contacts who didn't respond to your Email Campaign – with full control over timing, channels, targeting logic, and follow-up sequences.

Before You Begin

  • Make sure the Email Campaign you want to boost already exists in your account.

💡 Omnisend has a built-in Campaign Booster

The fastest way to re-engage non-openers is to use the built-in Campaign Booster. It automatically resends your Email Campaign – with a new subject line or SMS – to contacts who didn't open or click, 48 hours after the original send. You can enable it in the Review step of any Email Campaign, or up to 46 hours after sending. Learn more about Campaign Booster

Use an Automation workflow instead when you need:

  • More precise targeting – for example, contacts who didn't click and didn't make a purchase.

  • More than one follow-up message in a sequence.

  • Push notifications as a follow-up channel.

  • A/B testing or conditional splits within the follow-up flow.

  • A setup that runs independently of the 46-hour Campaign Booster window.

Benefits

  • More accurate targeting: This enhanced booster variant allows you to target customers who did not click and did not buy, which is more accurate than just targeting those who did not open or click on the email (as this can be affected by the iOS 15 update).

  • Advanced filtering options: You can use many splits and filters to target specific customer segments and improve the relevance of your follow-up emails.

  • Multiple communication channels: With booster automation, you can choose to send your follow-up email via email, SMS, and push notifications instead of just email or SMS.

  • A/B testing: Using an automation workflow allows you to conduct A/B testing to test different variations of your follow-up email and see which one performs better.

Setup Process

Step 1. Go to AutomationsCreate workflowCreate from scratch.

Step 2. Choose the Message Sent trigger. Select the Email Campaign you want to boost from the Message title dropdown. Click Save.

Step 3. Define an exit condition. Exit conditions control when contacts leave the workflow and stop receiving messages.

Common options:

  • Clicked on message – contacts exit when they click the original campaign.

  • Clicked on message + Placed order – contacts exit when they click or purchase.

  • Other options include opening an email or visiting a specific page on your store.

Step 4. If the campaign has already been sent, turn on Trigger Retrospectively.

⚠️ Without this setting, the workflow won't trigger because the event has already occurred.

The Trigger Retrospectively setting operates based on the first delay in your workflow. If the delay is set to 2 days, only contacts who received the original campaign within the past 2 days will be included. Add a delay block directly after the trigger.

Step 5. Add a message block – Email, SMS, Push Notification, or a combination. To edit the message content, select the block → click Edit content.

Additional Options

  • Set up A/B testing to optimize your follow-up messages.

A/B testing – Create two versions of your follow-up message, split your audience into two groups, and track which version performs better. Read Full Guide: A/B Testing in Automation.

Set Up Email Content

You don't need to create a new template from scratch. You can reuse your original campaign email with minor adjustments – like updating the subject line.

  • If the campaign has already been sent: Go to Campaigns, find the email, copy it, then open the email content and save it as a template.

  • If the campaign hasn't been sent yet: Select it, make your edits, then save it as a template.

Once saved, the template is available to use in your automation email block.

Enable Workflow

Once you've reviewed your workflow, turn it on. Monitor open and click rates and adjust timing or content based on results.

FAQ

What's the difference between Campaign Booster and this automation?

Campaign Booster is a built-in, one-step feature that automatically resends your campaign to non-openers or non-clickers after 48 hours. The automation approach gives you more control – multi-step sequences, push notifications, purchase-based targeting, and A/B testing. Learn more about Campaign Booster

How many follow-up messages should I send?

It depends on your audience and campaign goals. A sequence of two to three messages spaced over a few days is a common starting point. Track engagement and adjust – the goal is re-engagement, not volume.

Can I use different channels for my follow-up messages?

Yes. You can combine email, SMS, and push notifications in a single workflow. Use the channels that match your contacts' preferences and subscription status.
