Trigger Preview Tool: Verify Your Automation Trigger

Discover how to test and verify your automation triggers with the Trigger Preview Tool for accurate workflow execution

Written by Ira

The Trigger Preview Tool lets you check whether contacts that matched a trigger event will enter a specific automation. Use it to confirm your trigger settings and audience filters work as intended before activating the workflow.

Note: This feature is currently in Beta. As this is a Beta feature, you may experience some issues or incomplete functionality. Your feedback is essential in helping us improve! Please share your insights using the feedback form.

Before You Begin

  • The preview shows only the last 10 trigger events. It is not a full contact history.

  • The preview window is read-only. You cannot send test messages from within it.

  • A green checkmark confirms that filter conditions were met – it does not confirm that a message was delivered.

Benefits

  • Accuracy - Confirm that contacts matching your trigger will enter the automation.

  • Early detection - Identify any potential issues with trigger and filter settings before the workflow is activated.

  • Improved testing - Easily test your trigger setup to ensure everything works as expected.

Use Cases

  • Testing new automation - Validate that the trigger and filters are working correctly before launching the automation.

  • Troubleshooting - Use the tool to pinpoint why certain contacts may not qualify to enter the workflow, allowing you to make necessary adjustments.

  • Streamlined setup - Ensure smooth workflow execution by verifying trigger behavior and filter accuracy.

How to Use the Trigger Preview Tool

Step 1. Access the Automation

Go to Automations and open an existing automation or create a new one.

Step 2. Open the Trigger Settings

Click the Trigger block at the top of your automation to open the settings panel.

Step 3. Open the Trigger Preview Tool

In the top-right corner of the settings panel, click Test trigger.

💡 If you don't see the Test trigger button: Confirm you clicked the Trigger block – not the workflow canvas. The button appears in the top-right corner of the trigger settings panel only.

Step 4. View Recent Trigger Events

A new window shows up to the last 10 trigger events and whether those contacts will enter the automation.

💡 If the preview shows no contacts: No trigger events have been recorded in recent activity. This does not mean your automation is broken. To populate the preview, manually perform the trigger action – for example, submit your signup form, place a test order, or view a product page. Then reopen the preview.

Step 5. Evaluate Filters

The right sidebar shows profiles that triggered the last 10 events and whether they passed the trigger and audience filters.

  • ✅ Green checkmark: The contact met all conditions and will enter the automation.

  • ❌ Red X: The contact did not meet the necessary filters and will not enter the workflow.

Step 6. Review Detailed Information for Each Contact

Select a contact from the list to see:

  • Contact name and email address.

  • A link to the contact’s full profile.

  • Whether the contact qualifies to enter the automation.

  • The trigger event that occurred.

  • The trigger filters and whether the contact met all the requirements.

The Trigger Preview makes it easier for you to ensure that your automation triggers and filters work as expected. This feature allows you to test your workflows before they go live, helping you optimize your automations and avoid potential issues.

FAQ

The preview shows no contacts. Does that mean my automation is broken?

No. It means no trigger events have occurred in recent activity. To populate the preview, manually perform the trigger action – for example, submit your signup form or place a test order.

Where can I see all contacts who have entered my automation – not just the last 10?

The preview shows only the most recent 10 trigger events. For a full view of entries and per-contact progress, open the automation report under ReportsAutomation.
