Adding a contact to an existing list sounds simple, but what about adding a contact to the segment? The solution is tricky as it depends on the rule specified in your segment settings.

Let’s say you have a segment of VIP customers (based on high spending or frequent purchases) and an Excel file with a few contacts you’d like to include. This guide explains how to add those contacts to your existing segment, step by step.

Importing Contacts with Tags

The first step of the process is importing your contacts using the dedicated guide. Within the import process, you must add a tag to the contacts being imported.

In the Organize step of the import, add a tag to your contacts.

If you missed adding the tag during the import or if you'd like to tag other contacts, check the other possibilities for adding tags to your contacts.

Adding Contacts to the Segment

When it comes to segments, contacts will be added automatically whenever they meet the defined filters.

As you have added a tag to your imported contacts by now, you’ll need to include that tag in your segment filters to ensure the new contacts are added.

To make sure your existing contacts remain in the segment (even if they don’t have the new tag), set the filter connector to OR instead of AND. This way, contacts will enter the segment if they meet either the existing conditions or have the new tag.

⚠️ If your segment is used in a segment-based automation, make sure to prevent existing contacts from re-entering the workflow after you update the segment with a tag filter. Learn how to adjust your automation settings.
